SMM 031: How Have YOU Seen + Felt God as Your Partner in Motherhood?

How have you seen and felt God as your partner in motherhood? A while back I asked you, the listeners of the Spiritually Minded Mom podcast, to call in and share your answer to this question I ask in every episode.  Today, I’m sharing the answers I received. You’ll hear six moms talk about their insights and inspiring experiences with this important question.

How have you seen and felt God as your partner in motherhood?

Here’s a snippet of what you’ll hear:

Stacy, California

“Motherhood has allowed me to see the plan of salvation, how it works, and how it applies to me as a child of God, and then as their mother.”

Chelsea, Nevada

“I have really been guided in my journey to learn not just how to parent, but how to be a spiritual parent for my kids.”

Elizabeth, New York

“I’m so grateful that he’s still there, whether I’m seeking him or not.”

Megan, Utah

“The times that I do my part of being a partner with God, are the times I have definitely seen and felt God as my partner because I know he’s always there and always willing to help me.”

Natalie, Utah

“Even though it is hard. . . it is nice to know that the Lord is with me.”

Cheryl, Utah

“There are often times in parenting that I have no idea what to do or say, so often times I have dropped to my knees.”

How have YOU seen and felt God as your partner in motherhood?

At the end of the episode, I invite you to answer this question for yourself and give you a challenge to share your answer in a way that feels right for you.

SMM 030: Choosing Happiness + Embracing That Your Best is Enough in Motherhood || Becca Jackson

In this episode of the Spiritually Minded Mom podcast I interview Becca Jackson. Becca is on Instagram sharing tips on motherhood as well as health and fitness.  She shares how she fell into the trap of being the “Pinterest perfect mom.”  Becca talks about how she is choosing happiness instead of perfection in motherhood.

Choosing Happiness

Becca shares some personal struggles she went through after giving birth to her third daughter. She decided to make the choice to look at things differently and change her perspective, despite some negative feelings she was having.  She talks about choosing to have a positive and optimistic outlook everyday. Whether things are going good or bad, Becca believes there is always the choice to be positive.

Embracing Your Best Self

You’ll also hear about Becca’s weight-loss story and what made her finally decide to never give up. The internal transformation for Becca has been just as important as the physical changes.  She talks about body image and how she teaches her daughters confidence and living a healthy lifestyle. Ultimately, Becca tells how all of the physical changes she has made tie into her spiritual life.

Becca describes how God has been her partner in motherhood and how she embraces the truth that doing her best is enough.

SMM 028: Not Comparing The Way You Love + Owning Your Spiritual Gifts || Tessa Brown

Tessa Brown is my guest today on the podcast. She’s a wife and a mom to two boys ages 2 and 4. She’s also an artist and has a beautiful Instagram account where she shows her incredible talent of artwork depicting motherhood and Jesus Christ. She has learned to embrace the spiritual gifts God has given her and has found a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ as she pleads for help in becoming the mother He wants her to be.

Show Recap

Tessa relates the story of Moana facing the lava monster and how this story helped her in motherhood to know who she is and who God wants her to be. Tessa tells how she found painting early in motherhood to give her a place to focus so she could go back to her family and give more.

Growth Mindset

Tessa has developed a growth mindset about motherhood and shares some doable ways she has developed that mindset in her life.

Her advice to other moms is to figure out what makes you feel love for yourself, for God and for your kids and then to be aware of those things and seek them out. Tessa says to notice the times when you feel love and focus on those things.

Love

For Tessa, what always speaks the loudest in motherhood to her is to just love her children. She knows the only thing that lasts is love. What motivate is love. “Christ makes me feel that I am more than I am. … I want my kids to feel that from me.”

Tessa shares beautifully how she developed a deeper relationship with the Savior. She used to picture Christ standing over her shaking his head as a disappointed coach. Now she views Him as a cheerleader and friend who encourages her throughout her day, no matter what has happened.

Tessa feels it is important not to compare the way you show love to the way another mother shows love. “You have a divine way to love your kids.” Own it.

Artwork

Through her artwork, Tessa hopes mothers will feel love and that they are enough.

“I would love my art to bring mothers back to those moments when love was really all that matters because I feel that really is all that matters. If you do a lot of things wrong, but you get the love part right, I think you and your kids will have a great relationship. That’s what we’re striving for.”

Spiritual Gifts

Throughout the interview, Tessa talked about spiritual gifts and how a mother can use the gifts she’s been given in motherhood.  We had a great discussion about owning your gifts and not being afraid to claim them. Tessa shares a great insight on using what you’ve been given and why don’t have to be “everything” to your kids.

SMM 025: Mothering a Child with Mental Illness || Amanda Louder

Today’s topic of raising a child with mental illness is one I have wanted to talk more about for a while. I have reached out to a few people to share their experiences, however it hasn’t been right for them to tell their stories. Fortunately, Amanda Louder answered my prayers by reaching out to me to share her experience raising a child with a mental illness.

Show Recap

Amanda is a wife of 6 years to her husband and together they are blending a family of five children ranging in age from 19-10. In her years as a mother, she has learned to let go of control and enjoys seeing her children learning who they truly are.

Amanda and I dive in and talk about the challenges she has faced since her 16-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Bipolar II at the age of 8. She explains what this diagnosis means and how it affects her daughter and her family in their day-to-day life.

Mental illness and especially a child with mental illness can have a negative stigma in our society. Amanda talks about how the specific things she has done to educate people around her, advocate for her daughter and teach her daughter to advocate for herself.

If you are struggling with a child with mental illness, Amanda gives practical first steps you can take to help your child.

Amanda has been able to turn to God to help her with this mothering challenge. She has found that reading the Book of Mormon everyday has brought her peace. Amanda recognizes that reading the scriptures daily hasn’t taken the challenges away but rather given her the tools she needs to deal with the trials.

She also shares how she has used the atonement of Jesus Christ to help her as a mother. Amanda recognizes the many ways God has guided her, put people in her path and answered her prayers.

At the end of this episode, I have a bonus for you. Amanda talks about what she shares on her own podcast, Live from Love, about marriage, divorce and relationships. Her podcast has great content for anyone but especially for those struggling in marriage.

SMM 022: Accepting God’s Plan + Overcoming Feeling Unworthy Before God || Reagan Ogle

Episode 22 of The Spiritually Minded Mom podcast is my interview with Reagan Ogle. I came across Reagan’s podcast, The Luckiest Mom, when I was doing research to start my podcast.  Reagan knows about accepting God’s plan for her life. She believes one of the greatest challenges of motherhood is overcoming feeling unworthy before God because it keeps mothers from connecting with Him.  She is relatable, a full of light and a huge advocate for motherhood. I know you are going to love the things she shares in this interview.

In the interview we dive in and talk about what a perfect mom day would look like for Reagan as well as how she gets through when the hard days hit.

Reagan has a unique way of viewing her children as “scientists.” We discuss what this means to her and how it affects the way she interacts with her children.

When Reagan was young, she had her life all planned out, but God had plans that were different from hers. She shares how she learned to accept God’s plan by saying, “My plan would have been harder in different ways but God’s plan prepared me for what I need to be today.”

One of my favorite parts of this interview was when Reagan and I discussed guilt and feeling unworthy before God. Reagan has some great advice for overcoming both.

Finally, we discuss how we can connect with each other, as women, and how we can connect with God by being vulnerable and sharing our lives and our stories.
