SMM 055: How to Find Answers from a Position of Faith + Know Christ is a Champion of Women || Bergen Hyde

I am happy to welcome Bergen Hyde to the podcast. Bergen is the co-founder and creative director of WOMB, which you’ll more about in the interview. Bergen is married and has 3 children. Her number one passion is women’s issues, especially within the context of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she loves helping other women claim their power.

In the interview, Bergen shares three amazing lessons she has learned in motherhood.

Lesson 1: I’m happier and more fulfilled when I am an agent in my own life.

Bergen shares about how she came to know that motherhood was a choice she was making and how she realized she could choose something different. I loved her thoughts about how choosing from a whole place and with God’s guidance helps things work out.

Lesson 2: I can engage the Lord in hard questions from a position of faith.

If you are struggling or have ever struggled with questions about God, you will want to hear what Bergen has to say. She believes when we ask questions from a position of faith and find answers, we can help to make changes. She asks questions with the assumption she has heavenly parents who love her. Our discussion also addressed dealing with feelings of not receiving answers from God.

Lesson 3: Christ is a champion of women.

Bergen shared her own story of letting go of the darkness she felt inside. She talks about how she learned to feel the feelings and let them out but how she still did not feel whole.

She shares her experience of filling the hole she felt inside by turning to Christ.

No matter what wounds we have. No matter how dark. No matter how deep, Christ can heal them. … Christ is the only one who can fully heal those things for us. … His arms were always stretched out to me.

Bergen Hyde

Bergen’s story illustrates so well that learning to come to the Savior is a process. Her story gives hope to anyone who is struggling.

This episode also emphasizes how sharing our stories helps us remember we are not alone and offers hope. Bergen encourages other women to create the conversations they wish were happening.

Ultimately, Bergen shares how she knows the Savior “softens everything and sweetens everything and makes things holy.”

SMM 053: How to Use Agency + Love to Point Children to the Savior || Becky Proudfit

Today I’m welcoming Becky Proudfit to the podcast for episode 53. You may know her as one half of Becky squared where she cohosts the podcast Cultivate a Good Life with Becky Higgins. She is also a former Disney Princess, a wife and a mom to four, a lover of travel and a cancer survivor.

In this episode you will hear Becky remind moms that motherhood is “not about you.” She shares why she thinks motherhood is not about her but about loving her children and giving them agency.

Becky and I discuss not tying spiritual things to merely being obedient to parents. Rather, Becky believes in teaching children to obey out of love for Heavenly Father and the Savior.

We also talk about teaching children spiritual self-sufficiency so they can rely on the Savior as a perfect friend.

Becky frequently uses opposites, also a pattern found in the scriptures, to teach her children. She doesn’t shy away from talking about Satan and his counterfeits. She views times when Satan is working on you as evidence that you are doing something right.

Becky gives advice to moms whose children have used their agency to choose different paths. She also shares an easy and practical way any mom can know how God feels about her and recognize how He is showing up in her life.

SMM 050: How Promptings From God Can Be Hard + Good At The Same Time||Rachel Nielson

Episode 50! I can’t believe I am even typing that and I am so honored to share my interview with Rachel Nielson for this milestone episode.

Rachel is married to Ryan and they have two children, Noah, who is adopted and Sally, who was conceived through IVF. If you’re not familiar with Rachel, you will immediately see she is both down to earth and relatable.

She is also the host of  The 3in30 Podcast for moms. She interviews guests on a variety of motherhood topics and shares 3 doable takeaways every week.

When I edit an interview, I generally jot down notes as I edit and look for themes of the interview.

I looked at the notes I took for Rachel’s interview and realized I had found three main themes. As a nod to Rachel’s amazing podcast, here are three doable takeaways I found from this interview.

Number 1: “Just because God prompts you to continue with something, does not mean it is going to work out the way you want it to.”

Number 2: Whom the Lord calls, he qualifies.

Number 3: All things work together for good to them that love God. (Romans 8:28)

Rachel’s motherhood story illustrates beautifully both the joys and sorrows of motherhood. More importantly, Rachel’s journey teaches how trusting in God’s timing can bring us way more than we ever imagined.

SMM 049: How to Pursue What Will Really Make You Happy in Motherhood|| Richard and Linda Eyre

Today I’m sharing an interview with best-selling authors, Richard and Linda Eyre. The Eyre’s have been married for almost 50 years and have raised 9 children. They have authored numerous books and spoken around the world to very diverse groups about families and parenting as well as balancing work and family with personal needs.

Although they are seen as parenting experts, the Eyre’s were quick to point out in the interview they do not have a perfect family. Both Richard and Linda shared how they work hard to make family and communication a top priority.

You’ll hear the Eyre’s answer to my personal question about how they keep their large family connected. They shared many great ideas including having a monthly family testimony meeting. They talked about how spiritual things can bind families together.

In preparation for this interview, I read Richard’s newest book, The Happiness Paradox. The paradox Richard writes about is pursuing things we think will make us happy but which are actually making us unhappy.

Both Richard and Linda discuss three false concepts that are “joy thieves” and how they relate to parenting.

Richard believes you can’t shun a bad habit. His philosophy is you have to find a replacement for a habit you want to change. So, the second half of his book shares three “joy rescuers” you can use in your life to replace the “joy thieves.”

The interview is a great discussion of both the thieves and rescuers of joy. Both Linda and Richard share how all the concepts apply to motherhood, our relationship with God and the atonement of Jesus Christ.

At the end, I asked the Eyre’s my usual final question about how they have seen and felt God as a partner in parenthood. They both gave answers that  gave me new insights on my relationship with both my children and my heavenly parents. You’ll will want to listen to the end to hear this.
